Furnace Blowing Cold Air? 7 Causes, From Free Fixes to Real Repairs

The heat kicks on, the vents breathe... cold. Before you bundle up and brace for a repair bill, walk this list in order — it's sorted from most-common-and-free to genuinely-needs-a-pro.

1. The thermostat fan setting (free)

If the fan is set to ON instead of AUTO, the blower runs constantly — including between heating cycles, when it pushes room-temperature air that feels cold. Set it to AUTO.

2. Give it a few minutes (free)

Furnaces don't produce hot air instantly. If the air starts cool then warms within a couple of minutes, that's normal operation, not a problem.

3. The filter — again (nearly free)

A clogged filter overheats the furnace, which trips a safety switch that shuts the burners off while the fan keeps blowing. Result: cold air. Change the filter and give it 30 minutes to reset.

4. Pilot light or ignition (free to check)

On older furnaces, check whether the pilot is lit — relighting instructions are on the unit's panel. Newer electronic-ignition systems that click repeatedly without firing have an igniter or sensor issue: that's a repair.

5. The flame sensor (a common $150–$300 call)

A dirty flame sensor makes the furnace light, then shut down seconds later, over and over. Techs clean or replace these constantly — it's one of the most common furnace repairs in existence.

6. Gas supply (check other appliances)

If a gas stove or water heater isn't working either, the issue may be supply — check whether the gas valve to the furnace got bumped closed.

7. Limit switches, control boards, heat exchangers (the real repairs)

If none of the above solves it, you're into diagnostic territory — and a cracked heat exchanger in particular is serious (it can leak carbon monoxide; this is why furnaces get red-tagged). Time for a licensed technician, not a YouTube marathon.
